Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg
The Alexanders: Ellen, Bob, Saralinda, Elise
Ellen Alexander was one of Esther's closest friends. Esther
and Ellen maintained a friendship over several decades.
These two women shared many interests. Both loved the
literature of Dickens, Austen, and others, but above all,
both loved Early Music and played several musical instruments.
.
Ellen had other interests, such as weaving
beautiful mohair clothing - better viewed as works of art.
Ellen had her own loom. Ellen's husband Bob was a teacher,
teaching art. The Alexanders had two daughters: Elise and
Saralinda.
.
The Alexanders were fortunate enough to have a cabin at
Juniper Lake, Lassen National Park. Ellen and her brother
each inherited a cabin at Juniper Lake. Ellen's cabin had
a gas-powered refrigerator, food and water having to be
brought in, all waste taken out of the park area. Due to
heavy snowfalls, these cabins were only accessible for
three months of the year. The snowfalls were so heavy that
2' × 4' boards were used to prop up the roof, due to
the heavy weight of the snow.
.
Many friends were invited to share the beauty of Lassen in
friendly company!
.
Ellen and Bob both lived for awhile at Mendocino. In fact,
Esther and Ellen met in Mendocino when both were participants
in an Early Music orchestra practice: Esther was at breakfast
in a hotel, spoke to a little girl who turned out to be Elise.
The life-long friendship began.
.
Ellen was from French Huguenot people. Later Ellen and Bob
lived in the Berkeley area, the house being located atop a
veritable mountain, with a lengthy staircase for access.
.
Elise married Phil Stone. When both Bob and Ellen became
very sick, the Stones lovingly took care of these good people.
